It’s only fair in this fair and just community of ours to ‘unfold’ my dishes. Gasping is allowed when the door opens into my secret loves. My list begins with
Two yellow-rich eyes poached and clinging to a toasted pieceof my bread[[what we are about to make.
An amazing tomato/cheese on a piece of my bread [what we are about to make] and grilled until runny & bubbling and too hot to eat.
A dish of soup brimming over with dizzy vegetables which have met Mr. Biff Baff Boff in a pan [after the teaspoon of curry has been added].
In the same milieu with homegroan leeks which have met Mr. Potato and Mr. Biff Baff Boff and enjoyed the decoration of some yogurt or creme frais. Sometimes this tasty combination prefers to chill in the fridge[if we’ve paid the electricity bill]. I remember my grandmother with her ice fridge. Once a week the iceman cometh with a hugh block of ice which he lifted with some demonic tongs and slid into her ‘ice box’. I was constantly hoping that the tongs might slip and then I could increase my forbidden vocabulary!]
To move on to my specialities–marmalade tea cake. Yum! This was frequently appreciated by the book group I lead. [It’s an excellent way to use up your marmalade that is ‘a bit too old for guests].
The skill development next moves up market with an Apple & Walnut teacake. The best way to use up your Bramley apples and your fresh walnuts.
Both of these teacakes come from a dangerous Good Housekeeping cookbook from around the 50’s when each receipt had lots of butter in it! Today we have to use a ‘substitute’ to lengthen our lives.
In America they used to call these cookies ‘Toll House Cookies’. Each toll house along a road or canal kept a supply of these chocolate-drop cookies for the children who passed their way. I love to make them still–except they’re my fastest selling item and I’ve learned to check/taste them as soon as they come out of the oven.
THat’s it. My Dishes. Except for some very mature cheddar on a cracker with a glass of sherry…which makes my mouth yearn now.
Oops! The sun’s just come out . We’ll have to explore my bread on another day.
